This country pub is the talk of the town following its refurbishment into a barbecue smokehouse. When we found out that it was also dog friendly we couldn’t wait to take Elsa to see what all the fuss was about!
We first visited The Sheet Anchor a few years ago, before we had Elsa, and at the time we thought that it was a lovely pub, nicely decorated inside with a spacious garden area and tables outside. We were quite surprised when we found out that it was being refurbished, but started to hear lots of good things about it from our friends…
The pub is now part of the growing Parogon Group: a privately owned, Staffordshire based, independent company that owns several very popular venues including The Swan with Two Necks (which we’ve heard is dog friendly) and The Wayfarer (not dog friendly as far as we are aware, but does have a nice outdoor seating area.) As soon as we arrived it was clear that no expense had been spared with the refurbishment. The pub was virtually unrecognisable to us. There are lots of interesting and quirky features along with completely new furniture and interior fittings.
The back of the pub (pictured below) is where the main restaurant is situated. Unfortunately this area is not dog friendly, but the bar area at the front of the pub is, so it’s best to use the front door if you have your dog with you.
We visited at lunchtime on a weekday so we had plenty of choice when it came to where we could sit, but the pub can get busy at peak times and weekends so they do advise booking a table.
Elsa was very impressed with the half-pint glass! No dog beer is served in The Blockhouse though – this one is strictly for humans only!
The Menu | They serve a selection of steaks, burgers, ribs, chicken, fish & shellfish, along with salads, sides and desserts.
It didn’t take long for our food to arrive – we chose burgers! I had a spicy chicken one and my other half had a regular burger. Both were served with fries and homemade coleslaw. We were also given hand wipes which were very useful!
The portions are a good size and the food was fresh and delicious!
We couldn’t resist trying the deep fried macaroni cheese. So yummy!
Elsa was very well behaved and relaxed under the table while we ate our lunch. There is no dog menu, but we took her some lunch so she was content to eat her own food.
We were so full after our burgers that we couldn’t manage dessert, even though the waffles looked so good! We will have to have them next time…
On the way out we decided to explore the outdoor seating area. This has also been given a makeover since our last visit and it looks amazing! Definitely somewhere we’d want to spend a summer evening with Elsa and friends.
The Blockhouse at The Sheet Anchor is definitely somewhere that we’ll visit again. There are so many things on the menu that we want to try including the sharing platter and the desserts!
