Although we knew that this pub was dog friendly, we didn’t realise how popular it actually was with dog owners until we visited it on a weekday afternoon in July with Elsa…
The inside of The Swettenham Arms is decorated in a very traditional British country pub style. There is a large bar area with several tables and dogs are allowed anywhere in this section (where the floor is bare wood), but not in the main (carpeted) restaurant area.
We used to live approximately 5 minutes away from this pub, and have even attended a wedding reception here, so we knew that they served good food.
On this visit we took Elsa to meet Piglet for lunch, but she was not in the mood to sit quietly and decided to let the whole pub know about it too! She eventually settled long enough for us to enjoy our sandwiches and chips, which were delicious. All the food is homemade and they serve everything from salads to pub classics like steak and ale pie along with a selection of desserts.
When we finished lunch we headed outside so that Elsa could stretch her legs and explore the beautiful lavender meadow behind the pub…
Elsa and Piglet were eager to play and immediately started wrestling and chasing each other around on the grass outside!
Just when we thought they had had enough of playing, Elsa and Piglet were joined by several other dogs who were out walking in the beautiful countryside.
Next door to the pub, on the left hand side, there is an entrance to The Lovell Quinta Arboretum which is worth exploring if you are in the area and looking for somewhere to go for a walk. There is a small entrance fee but it’s worth paying as all the money goes towards the upkeep of the Arboretum itself. This is also where Buddy (a Paws across Britain Pack member) has featured on his profile page as one of his favourite places to visit. Click here to read more.
Before we knew it even more dogs arrived and both Elsa and I were overjoyed by this serendipitous encounter!
The atmosphere was so lovely and relaxed and we thoroughly enjoyed watching the dogs having fun!
Another reason we chose The Swettenham Arms for our afternoon outing was because of their lavender field, an ideal place to take photographs!
We had such a lovely time that we didn’t want it to end but eventually we had to call it a day. Elsa was completely worn out from all the excitement, we couldn’t have planned a better afternoon for her! We also got some lovely pictures of her and Piglet in the lavender field so overall it was a very successful trip to one of our favourite dog friendly pubs!
